A influência da língua inglesa e da cultura americana entre os estudantes de uma escola das Filipinas

Abstract

During the 19th and 20th centuries, the United States was expanding its territory, claiming and taking control over several other areas, where it introduced its habits, values and its visions regarding the administration of those territories, and also where it disseminated the English language, making it the official language of those countries, thus contributing to its status as the global language today. This process started in the Republic of the Philippines by the end of the 19th century, and this research aims to investigate the relevance of the American culture and of the English language in the country, to verify to what extent the Filipino participants of this research are immersed in this culture in their daily lives, and what is their perception regarding the matter. This research was based on the studies of the theorists Shackford (1990), Hall (1996), Cuddon (2013), Sadykova (2014) and Alfarham (2016). For the accomplishment of this investigation, a field research was carried out using a quali-quantitative approach. The result of this investigation demonstrates that the American culture has great weight in the daily lives of the Filipinos from the school where the research was conducted, being very present in their lives as if it was their own culture, and that they consider this cultural hybridism and the use of the English language as something advantageous and that can bring good opportunities in the future
