“Something entirely new”: reproduções e subversões de heteronormatividades de corpo e gênero nas fusões das Crystal Gems na série animada Steven Universe (2013-2019) à luz dos estudos queer

Abstract

Queer studies set up a recent area of academic studies and are developing as of now. Additionally, they are known for subverting and challenging norms and social patterns we live, including the culture we are inserted in. In this perspective, animations which carry queer elements in the narrative can be relevant and influent to the formation of a new way to see the world and culture, especially when animations as Steven Universe are usually watched most by a childish audience. Therefore, this research revolves around the following question: In which ways the fusions of the Crystal Gems reproduce or subvert heteronormativities of body and gender in the animation Steven Universe (2013-2019) from a queer studies perspective. In order to answer this question, the following general objective was established: to investigate in which ways the fusions of the Crystal Gems reproduce or subvert heteronormativities of body and gender in the animation Steven Universe (2013-2019) from a queer studies perspective. In order to accomplish this objective, the following specific objectives have been organized: to discuss the theoretical assumptions of the queer studies with emphasis in heteronormativity, body and gender; to identificate the characterization regarding body and gender in the fusions of the Crystal Gems in the animated series Steven Universe; to problematize heteronormative implications regarding body and gender in the fusions of the Crystal Gems. To reach the objectives, a bibliographic investigation of qualitative approach and of the exploratory type with interpretativist analysis was developed based on authors and theorists that dedicated to research and study the queer studies area, such as Judith Butler (2021), Guacira Lopes Louro (2020) and Richard Miskolci (2020). To summarize, the research reveals that the characters’ fusions present expressive characteristics in their dressing, shape, colors, appearances resulting in the reproduction or subversion expectations and patterns toward normative standards regarding normalized body and gender
