No recinto dos saberes: percursos históricos do Ginásio Municipal de Piracuruca (1957-1975)

Abstract

The present study aims to comprehend the History and Memory of the educational institution Ginásio Municipal de Piracuruca-PI, as a place of formation for the student population of the municipality and surrounding regions. Additionally, it seeks to analyze the institution as a space for the city’s school memory. The interest in researching this particular educational institution is based on the significance that the Ginásio Municipal held for the city from the second half of the 1950s onward, as Piracuruca, at that time, was one of the few cities in Piauí with institutions offering secondary education. The establishment of the Ginásio Municipal de Piracuruca in 1957 facilitated the education of numerous individuals who later became part of the intellectual and political circles of the city and the State. The temporal scope of this research spans from 1957, the year of the institution's founding, to 1975, the year it was disbanded and subsequently maintained by the Government of the State of Piauí from 1976. In that year, the school was renamed Unidade Escolar Presidente Castelo Branco, in honor of the first president of the military regime. Currently, the school is known as CETI Inês Maria de Sousa Rocha, a former student of the Ginásio. Methodologically, the research will focus on sources related to school culture. The sources used for the study will include documents produced by the school and/or archived within it, such as the foundation minutes, official gazette, internal regulations, enrollment books and records, loose documents (considered unofficial but reflecting daily school life), photographs of teachers, students, staff, and events (mostly civic). The theoretical-historiographical framework is based on the discussions proposed by Jureni Bitencourt (1989) and Maria do Carmo Brito (2002) to think about the local history of Piracuruca, Jacques Le Goff (2012) for discussions regarding memory; Márcio Cano (2012), Flavio Berutti and Adhemar Marques (2009), to think about the relationships between history and teaching. In light of the above, this research holds academic and scientific relevance as it delves into the fields of History, Memory, and School Education, contributing to new studies in Piauí historiography. It also has social relevance, as it addresses the construction of historical consciousness, particularly regarding the value of the memory of educational institutions in the formation of citizenship.
