Ficção, história e engajamento em Quarup, de Antonio Callado

Abstract

This work investigates the representation of historical facts, concerning to Brazilian military dictatorship in thenovel Quarup (1967), by Antonio Callado, once that, in this period, art became an instrument of political manifestation and complaint, gaining followers, mainly the young people, revealing names in music, in literature, in cinema and in theatre. It was then, from the first contacts with literary works that portrayed something connected to dictatorship, that emerged the imperative of knowing what else there were more of written works of that epoch. And there were a lot of them. There are, because art perpetuates itself. They are there, registred, all those years of torture and physical and psychological violence, it is there the struggle of the young people, thirsty for social changes. In this way, it was made a bibliographic research. The interpretative hypothesis, on which leans this study, is that the novel Quarup constitutes an important exponent of the engaged literature of Brazil. To validate the hypothesis, it is founded, mainly, on the postulations of Jean-Paul Sartre (2004), and yet, the writings of Benoît Dennis (2002) and Antonio Candido (1970, 1989, 1993, 1995, 2002). To the investigation of the construction of the historical referential of the corpus, it relies on Peter Burke (1992), Luís Costa Lima (2006) and Maria Teresa da Freitas (1986). Thus, the study was erected in four chapters and the results pointed to the confirmation of the hypothesis, showing that history and fiction often intersect in literary works and that the engaged writer, by assuming his commitment of going beyond the plot he writes, he reaches the critical eye of the reader up against the facts he narrates.
