Abstract

The cinematographic work “Stardust” (2007) tells the story of Tristan, who leaves his village named Wall for adventure himself in the enchanted world of Stormhold, searching for a falling star. Divided into a wall, the world presented by Neil Gaiman shows us the contrast between reality, fantastic and the influences shared between both, even though they are so different from each other. Considering the above, this research intends to answer the following question: How Tristan, the protagonist of the cinematographic work Stardust (2007), experiences the weird and the marvelous in the fantastic world, and what is his connection with the real world? To answer this question, a general objective was formulated: To investigate how Tristan, the protagonist of the cinematographic work Stardust (2007), experiences the weird and the marvelous in the fantastic world, and what is his connection with the real world for the lens of fantastic literature. For discourse the general objective, the following specific objectives were established: To discuss the theoretical assumptions of the real world and the fantastic literature from the perspective of the weird and marvelous genre; To identify the (un) connection between the fantastic world and the real world during Tristan’s Journey; and to realize which elements have connection to the weird and marvelous genre from Tristan’s perspective. To reach these objectives, bibliographical research was realized with a qualitative approach and exploratory nature, based on authors such as Tzvetan Todorov (2019); H. P Lovecraft (1927, 2008); Cesarani (2006), among others. The data analyzed show us the protagonist Tristan, during his journey, experiences the weird when he faces supernatural and manifest reactions of fear or surprise, however, he keeps desire to return to reality. While this, his experiences in the fantastic and with the consequent acceptance of marvelous make Tristan review his concepts, change his attitudes, and see the reality in a new point of view. The relation between these two worlds can be presented for connection and disconnection, being one of the main encounters the existence of the main character himself, Tristan Thorn, the son of beings belonging to the real and fantastic world. Besides that, reality and the fantastic meet each other in questions about morality, notions about identity, and fighting for power and beauty.
