Abstract: This study, through the generative trajectory of meaning, analyzes two detective stories written by Arthur Conan Doyle and the two transpositions to the movies directed by Guy Ritchie. The Detective stories are A Scandal in Bohemia, written in 1891 and The Final Problem, written in 1893. The movies are Sherlock Holmes, released in 2009 and Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, released in 2011. The present research had the general objective of analyzing the methodological generative trajectory of meaning in the four works cited above regarding the fundamental grammar, narrative and discursive structure, establishing conjunctions and disjunctions between them. The following were specific objectives: characterize detective stories; discuss questions about the genesis, rules and popular literature in the detective story sphere; ascertain the techniques and the language explored in the cinematographic system, and describe the generative trajectory of meaning in its fundamental, narrative and discursive levels, semantic and syntactic. To reach such purposes, it departed from the detective story characterization, as the discussion of important aspects such as popular literature and the rules of detective story. Afterwards highlighted were the semiotic studies, tracing the generative trajectory of meaning and its three levels. With regard to the cinema, the techniques and the languages used by this mean to signify were addressed. Lastly, analysis was done of the literary and cinematographic works utilizing the generative trajectory of meaning. The study composed of a bibliographic review of materials that structured the entire theoretical-methodological session and the corpus analysis. This consists of a descriptive and bibliographic research. The bibliographic selection was always aimed at the three main themes of this work: the detective story, cinema and the generative trajectory of meaning, basing on theorists such as Todorov (2006), Doyle (2010), Eco (2016), Greimas (1982), Jakobson (2007), Metz (1972), among others, in attempt to answer the leading questions from this work. From the study and analysis done from the texts, it was perceived that the detective stories studied here follow a different trajectory from what it is expected from a classic detective story. Concerning the intersemiotic relationship between the short story and the movies, it was observed that there were re-significations in relation to the methodological generative trajectory of meaning in the detective story. Moreover, the movies had shown that they were independent; bearing in mind that it is another semiotic system is being treated, and influenced by the period of its production portrayed some characters according to the action and adventure genre in which the movie is classified.
