Literatura e cinema: o processo de tradução intersemiótica do conto The bear came over the mountain, de Alice Munro, ao filme Away from her, de Sarah Polley

Abstract

This study investigates the connection between Literature and Cinema in light of the theory ‘Narrative Semiotics’ of Algirdas Julien Greimas, Lithuanian linguist and semiotician, whose studies are understood as a ‘theory of meaning’, which aims to understand the construction of meaning in the text. Its corpus is the short story ‘The bear came over the mountain’ (2001), by the awarded Canadian writer Alice Munro, and its filmic transmutation ‘Away from her’ (2006), directed by the Canadian film-maker, screenwriter, actress, singer and activist Sarah Polley. The research aims to analyze the process of transmutation of the literary text to the film in order to find the points of conjunction and disjunction between the artworks, through the comparative study of the generative trajectories of meaning of texts, noting the levels of the fundamental, semionarrative and discursive structures, and analyzing the basic operations of filmic construction, presented by the professor João Batista de Brito (2006), which will result in expansion, reduction and transformation of the performance of the narrative and its characters. As this analysis product, it was reached the enhancement of Canadian production, the expansion of research into the interactions between semiotics and other forms of art, especially literary and cinematic, and the understanding the film texts re-creation process dialogically connected to literary, producing autonomous and independent artworks.
