Abstract

With the implementation of the Military Coup in 1964, new directions were taken by Brazilian society. In a context marked by catastrophe, testimonial literature constitutes a genre that allows writers to narrate their traumatic experiences suffered or witnessed in the midst of such situations of intense violence, torture, silencing, exiles and disappearances. Similar to several intellectuals, Luís Fernando Salinas Fortes and Marcelo Rubens Paiva are two intellectuals who had their lives directly and profoundly affected by the Brazilian military dictatorship, in such a way that these situations left indelible marks in their lives, to the point that both transposed these experiences into the future. literary plan. Based on this, the present study aims to analyze the representation of trauma and memory in the testimonial narratives Retrato calado, by Luiz Roberto Salinas Fortes, and I am still here, by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, considering that in both works the authors thematize their experiences traumas as a result of the military regime in Brazil. Among other questions, the crucial issue that guides this study is: how are trauma and memory present in the testimonial narratives Retrato calado, by Luiz Roberto Salinas Fortes, and I am still here, by Marcelo Rubens Paiva? In order to arrive at a plausible answer, we outline the following specific objectives: to research the context of the Brazilian military dictatorship, highlighting the role played by literature in the face of the policies that characterized this period; describe aspects of the testimonial literature, emphasizing the discussions about the representation of trauma and memory in the testimonial narratives of the military dictatorship in Brazil; examine the way in which trauma and memory are presented in the testimonial narratives Retrato calado, by Luiz Roberto Salinas Fortes, and Ainda estou aqui, by Marcelo Rubens Paiva, pointing out the convergences and divergences between the two narratives. Therefore, this study constitutes a bibliographical, critical-analytical research of a qualitative nature, so that it is supported by the theoretical assumptions of Ângela Gomes (2002), Philippe Lejeune (2008), Márcio Seligmann-Silva (2003; 2010), Sigmund Freud (1976), Maurice Halbwachs (2006), among other thinkers who, similarly, contribute to the realization of the outlined objectives. Therefore, from the reading and analysis of the works that serve as the corpus for this study, it is clear that the authors make use of memory to expose their traumatic experiences, through the truculent policies of the repressive apparatus of the State.
